Beam specimens less than 48 hours old are very fragile and subject to
micro-cracking that is not visible, but definitely adversely affects
ultimate test strength. There are many causal factors that may create
micro-cracking, but this cracking can be caused when the beams are
lifted using the flanges of the mold or the opposite corners of the
mold, which imparts torsional stress on the specimen.
